Kids Experiencing Homelessness Go Back to School

As the new school year approaches, we’re reminded of the mix of emotions it brings for many children. While it’s typically a time of excitement and anticipation, for those living at the Mission, it can be filled with uncertainty and anxiety.

For our school-aged children currently residing here, the classroom isn’t just a place of
learning but also a challenge when faced with homelessness. Research underscores the
myriad difficulties these children encounter—from health concerns to emotional strains—
compounded by the instability of their living situations, disrupting their education.

At PCM, we strive to provide stability and support beyond basic needs. We’re gearing up to equip our kids with essential supplies like backpacks, shoes, and clothing. However, we can’t do this without your kindness..

We are currently in need of school supplies and new or gently used backpacks, which benefit not only our children but also low-income families through the Help Center. Additionally, do you have gently used children’s clothing or shoes that could find a new purpose here? Your donations can be dropped off at the Help Center or any of our Toss Boxes located throughout town (visit pcmlincoln.org/tossboxes for locations).

Meeting these needs also requires financial support, especially as costs continue to rise. Your contributions this month will directly impact the lives of our children, ensuring they have the resources they need for a successful school year. No donation is too small and every gift makes a significant difference.

These young individuals face challenges that can build resilience and unlock their potential. Our goal is to empower them with the tools and encouragement they need to thrive academically and beyond.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support as we strive to break the cycle of homelessness. Your contributions make a tangible difference in the lives of these children.

WHERE DO HOMELESS KIDS IN AMERICA LIVE?

1.2+ million unhoused children were enrolled in public schools during the 2021-22 school year, according to the Department of Education. Of those:

  • 76% were living temporarily with family or friends.
  • 11% were in shelters or transitional housing.
  • 9% were in hotels or motels.
  • 4% were unsheltered, often living in abandoned buildings or cars.

STUDIES ON KIDS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS:

  • 57% spend at least one day every month without food.
  • 52% were chronically absent during the school year.
  • 40% of ALL homeless in the United States are under age 18.

Children and youth are one of the fastest growing populations of homelessness. Within the next 10 years, they could be the largest group.
