A CULTURE OF CARING
The PCM Free Medical Clinic exists to offer physical, emotional, and spiritual healing to hurting people in Lancaster County, Nebraska, who lack medical insurance or the ability to pay for health care.
Located just north of People’s City Mission, the Free Medical Clinic provides primary medical care to uninsured residents of Lancaster County, filling gaps in the existing medical network where it is difficult to meet needs of low-income uninsured residents as quickly as necessary.
Medical services are provided through a network of practicing and retired volunteer doctors and other medical professionals, with a combination of day, evening and weekend hours. At the Free Medical Clinic, volunteer doctors and medical professionals can focus on providing care while minimizing their administrative requirements— i.e. they can treat people without worrying about insurance coding, managing staff, paying rent, etc.
The staff and volunteers of PCM’s Free Medical Clinic provide prompt treatment of minor medical needs and ongoing management of chronic health conditions.

In 2009, Karen was invited to participate in PCM’s Free Medical by the clinic’s former manager. Karen had no idea that supporting the Mission with medical samples and supplies (and encouraging other PAs and students to support as well) would change her life’s course. But it did just that when she was able to volunteer in the clinic herself.
Karen became completely enamored by the opportunity to help uninsured people improve their health and access to care. She officially joined PCM in 2015 and now serves as Clinic Continuity Provider and Medical Clinic Director.
Karen trained at UNMC, retired from UNMC clinic in January 2015, but continues to work casually for Nebraska Medicine. With over 20 years of Internal Medicine experience, she also serves as adjunct faculty for several PA programs. Karen precepts and assists training medical students, PA and NP students at PCM while continuing to practice at PCM, and At Nebraska Medicine Immediate Care Clinics in Omaha area.
Karen has been married to her husband, Steve, for 39 years. They have 2 children, 2 marvelous grandchildren, and her mother, Betty, volunteers through the summers at PCM clinic and on 251 bus.
