When Women Choose Homelessness Over Abuse
Domestic violence is so common among youth, single adults and families who become homeless, that it is fair to say that most of the women, and some of the men, staying with us have experienced physical and emotional abuse at some point. Some are immediately fleeing domestic violence when they come to us, but for the majority, it is a part of their story and what brought them to the Mission.
Many times women find themselves staying with a violent man just to keep from becoming homeless. When they flee that environment and come to the Mission, they are seeking safety for not only themselves, but for their children as well.
They are not alone.
One in three women in Nebraska suffers from domestic violence. In Lincoln that statistic represents over 47,000 women, many who will need emergency housing. With children, the number is even higher. We also have male guests who have suffered abuse.
But there is HOPE. One mom I spoke with recently came to us from an abusive relationship. She found healing and restoration through a newfound relationship with Christ. She was able to take advantage of our women’s Bible study, Connections church on the PCM campus, and the stability provided by PCM staff & housing. God directed her emotional healing in a wise and timely way. We know that His promises are still true, and because his promises are true, hope cannot be extinguished.
Just know the Mission is committed to helping victims of abuse. We let them know there are many people who care deeply about their situation, and that God loves them and will care for them as they move forward.
Can you help us in our efforts?
Winter unfailingly has a significant impact on the number of people coming to us and we could really use your financial support. Any size gift would be greatly appreciated as we continue to care for those in need.
Thanks for your kindness and partnership with us. Together we can make a difference in the lives of many hurting people.
God’s rich blessings!
Pastor Tom
